Traveling in Texas

by Fred Sinclair

Mr. Lee De Spain was sheriff when we moved here in 1973.

At that time Boerne had one policeman, Mr. Buck, and he only worked during the day.  During the night a deputy sheriff would drive through town occasionally as he patrolled the county.  The county at that time was very frugal and didn't spend any money unless it had to.

So one night the deputy called Sheriff De Spain and said he had picked up a naked man on IH-10 at the Bexar County line and asked what the should do with him.  De Spain's answer was typical of  Texas at that time.

"Take him to the Kerr County line and turn him loose," De Spain ordered.  And that is what the deputy did.

I have sometimes wondered how long it took that naked man to get to El Paso.
